Drawn to Faith

"They came to the village where they were going, and he pretended to go further. But they compelled him to stay” (Luke 24:28-29).

From Jerusalem to Emmaus it was about seven miles, probably a two-hour walk. During the journey, the disciples were listening to the words of the Lord.

"They got to the village... and he pretended he was going further". He tested them again. He pretended that he went further. What reaction would they have? "But they forced him to stay, saying: Stay with us, because it is getting late, and the day has already declined. So he went in to stay with them".

But, let us think for a moment: what they least expected was to see the Lord, because they did not believe that he had risen. However, at that point, after hearing the words of that stranger, they forced him to stay. They left him no choice: "You have to stay".

Let us consider that they still do not recognize it. The faith is still outside of them, they are simply clinging to the faith of Another. They needed to hold onto something, and here they found a man to hold on to. They did not yet have the faith kindled within themselves.

Here is a word for us. On what, or on whom, is our faith based today? Could it be that we still need to hold on to something visible? Or that we need a good leader, and we say: "This man does have light, he has clarity; I will go with him"? But, could it be that you are walking through the revelation that that man has, without that revelation having entered your heart?

Is there a believer, someone who receives this word, who is always in need of external things, whose faith has never really penetrated into his heart and who still moves in the realm of the visible and the palpable? That is to say, if there are no miracles, he does not go; if there are no answers, it doesn't go; if there is no prosperity and things do not go the way he wants, then he leaves. And he wanders around looking for external things to hold on to. The Lord save us from that!
