Near You

"And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Acts 2:21).

How is this possible? It is, because God has fulfilled another prophecy of Joel that announces: "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh" (2.28). Once the Holy Spirit has been poured out on all humanity, the weakest request that the sinner makes to God is enough.

No gospel preacher can be of much use if he doesn't believe this. Vital to our preaching is the proximity of the Holy Spirit to the sinner. God in heaven is too far from man's reach.

Meanwhile, "do not say in your heart: Who will ascend to heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) … The word is near you" (Rom. 10:6, 8). I always trust that the Holy Spirit is upon a man when I preach Christ, in the same way that he was upon the waters at creation.

He is waiting to bring Christ into that man's life. His ministry is like the light of day. He opens the windows even a little, and the light floods and illuminates everything inside.

With just a minimal call from the heart to God, at that very moment the Spirit enters and begins his transforming work of conviction of sin, repentance and faith – the miracle of the new birth. (Watchman Nee).
