What You Ask for, You Get

The Lord accomplished many goods among men, for he had compassion on them. His heart burned with pity, because he saw them as sheep without a shepherd. Many he healed himself: some, through the intercession of friends; to others even more helpless, he healed on his own initiative, without them even asking for it. But there are some whom he attended to according to the terms of their own request. That is, he granted what they asked for.

Once, a leper approached him and said: "Lord, if you want, you can make me clean". The Lord answered him: "I want to, be clean". That man believed that if only the Lord wanted to do it, he would be healed.

Another time, some blind men approached him, and the Lord said to them: "Do you think I can do this?". They told him: "Yes, Lord". Then the Lord Jesus said to them: "According to your faith be it done unto you". This time the Lord focused attention on their faith.

The Lord said to Bartimaeus: "What do you want me to do for you?". Bartimaeus replied: "Teacher, may I recover mi sight". The account adds: "Immediately he received his sight". Bartimaeus's request was very specific, and he received according to what he had asked for.

When the father of the demon-possessed boy approached the Lord to say: "If you can do something, help us", the Lord answered him in the same terms: "If you can believe, everything is possible for those who believe". The man doubted that Jesus could do anything, so the Lord, using his own words, answered him. Nothing could have been done by the Lord if that man had not cried out afterwards: "Help my unbelief".

These examples confirm the teaching of our Lord, who said: "Ask and it shall be given you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you". And also the teaching of Santiago, which says: "You do not have, because you do not ask". How are we asking? Or are we not even asking?
