Water of Life

"Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14).

Today there are hundreds of human beings dying of thirst every day. One and a half million children die every year for lack of drinking water. According to official UNICEF data, 4,500 children die every day from diseases caused by drought. And the situation is becoming more and more complicated.

But in addition to the physical drought, there is an even worse one: the drought of the soul, which produces a thirst that cannot be quenched with just anything. Many people live today dying of spiritual thirst. And, although it may seem incredible or absurd, so do many Christians.

I can see the Lord walking among those thirsty, dying crowds who lie by the side of the road asking as a mercy for a little water to refresh their lips; I can see Him bending down to those people and pouring His refreshing water over all their bodies; I can hear the sweet voice of the Lord, which, though sweet, echoes mightily from heaven to earth, saying: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink" (John 7:37).

When our mouth is parched, when we faint because of thirst, when we are dehydrated, when we are sunburned, with parched lips, with wild, desperate eyes, we can still hear the voice of our Lord saying to the inhabitants of the deserts: "He that is thirsty, let him come; and he that will, let him take of the water of life freely" (Rev. 22:17). "Lord, I thirst for You; give me Your water... Your life".
